Picasso and peace

Picasso “linked the Sardana to the values of brotherhood and peace”. The Sardana is a recurring element in Pablo Picasso’s work. The traditional Catalan dance became increasingly important in the artist’s depictions over the years, mainly in the 1960s. Specifically, it is the drawing known as “La Sardana de la Pau”, which Picasso created in the Café de Ceret in 1953, where he integrated the peace pigeon.

In 1062, the architect Busquets worked with Picasso and created the friezes of our mural. Picasso and Nasier began to work together in the artistic context of “la Síntesi de les Arts”, the joint reflection between architects and artists on the role of each in the resolution of architectural and town planning projects.

In the mural, Picasso depicts scenes from the Catalan popular tradition with joy and highlights the double Sardana, turning the Picasso frieze of the COAC into a symbol of peace open to the whole world. And he will continue to work on the Sardana and the dove of peace for much of his life.

As part of the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death, the COAC will host the exhibition “Picasso, Urbanism and the Synthesis of the Arts” from 16 November to 2 February 2024.
